EN ISO 11612 – PROTECTIVE CLOTHING - CLOTHING TO PROTECT AGAINST HEAT AND FLAME

Protective clothing certified according to EN ISO 11612 provides protection against brief contact with heat and flame. The heat can be convection heat, thermal radiation, metal splash, contact heat or a combination of these. 

EN ISO 11612- protective clothing can consist of one separate garment or multiple garments, which needs to be worn together. The garments shall cover the wearer up to the neck and down to the wrists and ankles.  Additional personal protective equipment is required for full body protection, for example helmet, face protection, gloves and boots. 

The basic requirement for all EN ISO 11612-certified garments is limited flame spread which is either tested with only surface ignition (A1) or with both surface ignition and edge ignition (A2). In addition, the minimum level for at least one of the other protection parameters below must be met. 

(A1) Limited flame spread, surface ignition method. 

(A2) Limited flame spread, edge ignition method.

(B) Convection heat, scale 1-3 where 3 is best. 

(C) Thermal radiation, scale 1-4 where 4 is best. 

(D) Molten aluminium splash, scale 1-3 where 3 is best. 

(E) Molten iron splash, scale 1-3 where 3 is best. 

(F) Contact heat, scale 1-3 where 3 is best. 

In addition to material requirements, design requirements are also set to avoid welding sparks and metal spatter to get stuck on the garment and cause skin burns.
