ANTISTATIC PROPERTIES AND ESD

All safety footwear in the Blåkläder range is antistatic, which is a basic requirement of the EN ISO 20345 standard. In addition, we offer footwear that is verified as ESD products, i.e. approved for use in Electrostatic Protected Areas (EPA).
The purpose is to avoid electrostatic discharges, whether the properties are antistatic or ESD. However, there is an important difference; the antistatic specification in the EN ISO 20345 standard is designed to protect the person wearing the footwear, while the requirements of the ESD standards (EN 61340-X-X) are designed to protect the product that is being handled by the person wearing the footwear.
The two different requirements have separate test methods.

The antistatic properties stipulated in the EN ISO 20345 standard are tested using just the footwear and laboratory equipment. The footwear must have a contact resistance between 1 GΩ and 100 kΩ. If the footwear is too conductive, this may put the safety of the person wearing it at risk.
There are 2 different methods to test the ESD properties;

The EN 61340-4-3 test is carried out using laboratory equipment and at three levels of humidity. Class 1 is the driest and thus the highest class. The contact resistance must be between 100 kΩ and 100 MΩ to be approved.

EN 61340-5-1 tests an entire system, including the footwear and the person. The footwear is ESD-compliant if the measured contact resistance is below 35 MΩ. No lower limit of resistance is defined.

This means that although the test methods are slightly different, footwear that meets the antistatic requirements of EN ISO 20345 should also meet ESD-approval requirements. However, Blåkläder always tests safety footwear separately for the ESD requirements if the footwear is intended to be approved for use in EPA areas.
Blåkläder’s ESD-approved safety footwear is approved by RISE, Research Institutes of Sweden;
