HOW DO I DRESS FOR COLD WEATHER?

Always right with layering

Some principles never go out of time or become less useful. When it comes to protecting against cold, layering is still by far the best. At Blåkläder we have designed a concept with layers as the foundation. We divide the protective garments according to the temperature they will be working in and then recommend the right workwear for the right temperature.

When working hard during cold conditions it’s important to dress right to stay warm and dry.

The largest risk of staying outdoors in cold weather is to dress incorrectly and freeze and sweat alternately. The 3-layer principle gives you the chance to regulate your body temperature by adding or removing garments as the weather or work requires.

The classic principle of layering during colder seasons a given in order to maintain heat, but which garments should you dress yourself in order to keep the right body temperature you might ask? Don’t worry, we’ll tell you.


THE 3-LAYER PRINCIPLE

LAYER 1 – TRANSPORT MOISTURE FROM THE SKIN

Layer 1 is the foundation, by using a base layer of functional material that transports moisture from the skin to the next layer you get a good base.

LAYER 2 – INSULATE AGAINST COLD

Layer 2 helps insulate your body and maintain warmth. It’s common to choose cotton material as the middle layer since there is a belief that cotton warms the best. It heats but doesn´t remove any moisture, which makes the body cold. That’s why it´s important to choose a synthetic material that transports moisture onto the next layer.

LAYER 3 – PROTECT OUTER SHIELD AGAINST WIND, COLD AND RAIN

Layer 3 acts as an external shield against wind, rain and cold, and helps you retain the body heat. Blåkläder is offering the correct clothing and protection no matter if you are working in -0°C, -10°C or -20°C


EN 342 - PROTECTION AGAINST COLD ENVIRONMENTS 

Protective clothing certified according to EN 342 gives the wearer protection against cold environments. Requirements are set on thermal insulation and air permeability. Resistance to water penetration is an optional requirement. 

A = Thermal insulation, measured value 
B = Air permeability class (1 – 3 where is best) 
C = Resistance to water penetration class (optional) (1-2 where 2 is the best)
